Portable storage devices

Anyone making decisions with regard to portable storage devices eg CDs, DVDs, USBs?
Our IT dept is about to deploy a new operating environment which is probably going to make it easier to use such devices. When we started a conversation about the problems with such devices the IT solution was to veto use of the devices - not very helpful.
I am actually thinking along the lines of why do staff use the devices? Okay if they want to work from home then really we should be providing remote access. Perhaps we can restrict problems by restricting use such as only for presentations at external sites?
But when to these restrictions ever work? Can they be monitored?
